Heroic Lionesses Triumph 2–1 over Italy with a sensational comeback to book their place in the UEFA Euro Final
After being dismissed by many following a disappointing opening defeat to France, England roared back with a determined win over the Netherlands in a do-or-die clash. Their resilience was on full display in the quarter-finals, where they overturned a 2–0 deficit to beat Sweden, and then survived a nerve-shredding penalty shootout despite having four attempts saved.
Just when it looked like their journey might end in the semi-final against Italy, with only seconds remaining, they dug deep once more. A dramatic late equaliser forced extra time, where they clinched a breathtaking 2–1 victory and secured their spot in a third consecutive major tournament final.

Defending champions England staged yet another unforgettable comeback to secure their place in the Euro 2025 final, edging past Italy with a dramatic extra-time winner. Teen sensation Michelle Agyemang, brought on late in the match, rescued her side with a composed equaliser in the 96th minute, keeping their hopes alive.
I’m buzzing,” Agyemang said. “I might not look it, but I am buzzing. It’s crazy. To do that two games in a row now in that kind of fashion, it shows the character of this team and I’m so grateful that we’re still here to see another week. To be down for almost 96 minutes and to go change it, turn the game around, it’s a collective effort and fight. Without every single player on the pitch, every single player on the bench, coaches, staff, we wouldn’t be here today, so I’m grateful for that. Wow, I’m so happy to be here and bring on Basel and I’m excited for whoever we play against in the final.”
Then, deep into extra time, it was substitute Chloe Kelly who sealed the deal. After seeing her penalty saved, she pounced on the rebound and rifled the ball into the net, sparking wild celebrations as England clinched their spot in the final in the most dramatic fashion.
The match, held in Switzerland, was a rollercoaster from start to finish. Italy had taken the lead through Barbara Bonansea in the first half, but England’s bench once again proved decisive. Manager Sarina Wiegman’s faith in her substitutes paid off handsomely, with both Agyemang and Kelly making a vital impact.
This result marks England’s third straight appearance in a major final, and Wiegman now has the chance to claim her third consecutive European title as a manager. The Lionesses will face either Germany or Spain in Sunday’s final in Basel, with kick-off set for 17:00 BST.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, manager Sarina Wiegman captured the mood perfectly: “One day we’re going to make a movie about this! Actually, it already feels like one — it’s just incredible.” It was a rollercoaster of emotion — unpredictable, high-stakes, and, as always with the Lionesses, thrilling until the very end.
