Princess Royal thanks Volunteers and Inspires residents rebuilding their lives and Lydney after Devastating Natural Disaster
The Princess Royal recently visited Lydney, Gloucestershire, to meet and celebrate the remarkable residents and volunteers who have made an incredible impact on their community, particularly in the wake of a devastating natural disaster. Residents in a storm-hit town have said the Princess Royal was left “shocked” by the devastation caused to their homes by flooding.
The effects of the natural disaster in Lydney were devastating. Torrential rains and intense storms led to widespread flooding, inundating homes, businesses, and roads. Several properties were severely damaged or destroyed, with floodwaters rising quickly and leaving residents with little time to evacuate. Many homes were left uninhabitable, with furniture, belongings, and cherished possessions washed away. The destruction extended beyond homes, with local infrastructure, including bridges and roads, suffering significant damage, making it difficult for emergency services to reach affected areas. The community was left to cope with the aftermath, as families were displaced and essential services were disrupted, adding to the emotional toll of the disaster. Despite the immense challenges, the strength and resilience of the residents, alongside the support of emergency services, played a key role in recovery efforts.
The Princess Royal was welcomed to the high street, where a number of shops and businesses are still boarded up due to damage. After meeting business owners, emergency services and council workers, Princess Anne braved heavy rain to walk half a mile to meet residents in Lakeside Avenue. During her visit, Princess Anne expressed deep admiration for the selfless dedication and hard work of those who contribute to local initiatives and volunteer efforts. By taking the time to engage with individuals who have supported their neighbors through such a challenging period, she highlighted the essential role of community spirit and generosity in overcoming adversity. Her presence was a powerful reminder of the resilience that thrives in the face of hardship, as well as the positive influence of collaboration and compassion in fostering stronger, more resilient communities.
The relief and emergency services responded with extraordinary heroism, dedication, working tirelessly to provide immediate support. Teams of firefighters, paramedics, and volunteers worked around the clock, conducting rescues, distributing essential supplies, and ensuring the safety of those affected. The swift and coordinated efforts of local authorities and national agencies offered immediate aid, set up temporary shelters, and spearheaded clean-up efforts.
Princess Anne’s visit brought further encouragement to the community, shining a light on the incredible work of these relief services and bolstering the spirits of those who were affected. Her visit reinforced the importance of resilience, hope, and collective action, reminding everyone that even in the most challenging times, the strength of a united community can prevail. The Princess Royal unveiled a plaque to commemorate the flooding of Sunday, November 24 and her visit which will be attached to the bridge.
Mayor of Lydney Cllr Natasha Saunders thanked her for coming “to see the devastation from Storm Bert and the community resilience that’s helped rebuild our town.”
