Over the last ten years, the evidence that we face urgent challenges to protect the environment has become indisputable, and it’s clear that the time to act is now. Drawing inspiration from the concept of moonshots, which since the moon landing in 1969 has become shorthand to talk about the most ambitious and ground-breaking goals, Prince William announced The Earthshot Prize: an ambitious set of challenges to inspire a decade of action to repair the planet. We believe in the power of human ingenuity to prove to us all that the seemingly impossible is possible.
The Earthshot Prize
The Earthshot Prize is a global environmental award launched in 2020 by Prince William with the goal of driving transformative action to protect and restore the planet. Inspired by the “Moonshot” challenge of the 1960s, it embodies the same spirit of bold ambition, urgency, and the belief that seemingly impossible goals can be achieved with human ingenuity. By 2030, the prize aims to catalyze significant progress toward solving some of the world’s most pressing environmental issues.
Each year, the Earthshot Prize recognizes and rewards innovative solutions in five critical areas known as “Earthshots”: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate. Five winners are selected annually, each receiving £1 million in funding to scale their solutions. These winners include individuals, communities, and organizations that are already creating change on a local or global scale. From sustainable food systems to cutting-edge clean energy innovations, the prize amplifies solutions that have the potential to be replicated and adopted worldwide.
Beyond financial support, the Earthshot Prize provides winners with a powerful platform for visibility, mentorship, and connections to a global network of supporters. By highlighting stories of hope and progress, it aims to shift the narrative on climate change from despair to one of optimism and action. The prize recognizes that humanity has the power to heal the planet, and through collaboration, creativity, and commitment, transformative change is possible.
With high-profile award ceremonies that draw attention from global leaders, celebrities, and media, the Earthshot Prize has become one of the most prestigious environmental accolades in the world. Its focus on actionable, scalable, and innovative solutions ensures that it does not merely celebrate hope but also drives concrete change. By uniting people from all walks of life, the Earthshot Prize envisions a future where nature thrives, oceans are restored, air is clean, and climate solutions create a better world for generations to come.
