The HMS Prince of Wales is set to lead a carrier strike group on a seven-month mission to the Indo-Pacific in 2025. This deployment aims to reinforce maritime security, uphold international law, and strengthen alliances with regional partners.Notably, Norway will contribute two vessels, including a frigate, to this deployment, highlighting the deepening maritime collaboration between the UK and Norway.
During his visit, Prime Minister Starmer emphasized that the UK’s foreign policy extends beyond its immediate neighborhood, focusing on global challenges and supporting allies worldwide. He stated, “This is just the beginning of our commitment to the Indo-Pacific,” reflecting the UK’s strategic “Indo-Pacific tilt” to counter growing influences in the region and ensure a widespread Western presence.
The deployment will include joint patrols with Pacific Island nations to reinforce maritime security, respond to natural disasters, and combat illegal fishing. Additionally, HMS Prince of Wales is scheduled to visit Singapore, further solidifying defense ties between the UK and Southeast Asian partners.
This mission follows previous deployments, such as HMS Queen Elizabeth’s voyage to the Indo-Pacific in 2021, and aligns with the UK’s ongoing efforts to maintain a persistent naval presence in the region. The Royal Navy currently has two patrol vessels, including HMS Tamar, actively operating in the Indo-Pacific to support regional security initiatives.
