Mt. Iwaki, Hirosaki, Japan

Mount Iwaki is a mountain located about 15 km east-northeast of Hirosaki city.

It is a volcano, and there are three peaks on the top. The highest peak is also named as Mount Iwaki, and is 1,625 meters high.

It has a conic shape like Mount Fuji, so it is called “Tsugaru Fuji”. The last eruption was in 1863, and now the volcanic activity is relatively inactive.

Most people living in Tsugaru region can see Mount Iwaki. So it has been worshipped as a god by them since a long time ago, and there is a branch pavilion of “Iwakisan Shrine” on the top.
In every August 1st on the lunar calendar (almost, the beginning of September), “Oyama-samkei” festival of the shrine is held.

Many people climb Mount Iwaki in the middle of the night, visit the shrine to pray for a good harvest and watch the sunrise from the top of the Mountain.
