Marrakech Museum, Marrakech-Médina, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco

There’s much hand-crafted gorgeousness on display in Marrakesh’s museums and galleries. Start at the Museum of Moroccan Arts in Dar Si Said which showcases Marrakesh’s graceful riad architecture and regional craftsmanship. Items on display at the Musée de Marrakech include Rabati embroidery, inlaid daggers and contemporary art. Fascinating antique images of the city are on display at Maison de la Photographie while Maison Tiskiwin’s varied artefacts offer tantalising glimpses of Marrakesh’s trading-post past.

The highlight of the Ville Nouvelle is Jardin Majorelle. The former art deco home of Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé houses the fashion designer’s collection of Moroccan decorative arts, artworks by Jacques Majorelle and rotating exhibits. Also over in the Guéliz area of the Ville Nouvelle are several commercial art galleries offering fresh takes and original talent well removed from the Orientalist clichés of the tourist markets of the medina.
