Governor Jay Inslee and Trudi Inslee

Governor Jay Inslee

With Jay as governor, Washington has led the nation with bold solutions to support working families. Together, we will guide Washington to a better, stronger and more just future.

A fifth-generation Washingtonian, Governor Jay Inslee grew up in the Seattle area, where his father was a high school teacher and his mother was a Sears & Roebuck sales clerk. After graduating from the University of Washington, Jay married his high school sweetheart, Trudi Tindall. Together, Jay and Trudi spent nearly 20 years working and raising their three sons Jack, Connor, and Joe in the Yakima Valley, and are now very proud grandparents of four little Inslees.

Jay entered public service in 1985, successfully fighting for a new public high school in Selah. Four years later, he became a state representative in the 14th legislative district. In 1993, Jay was elected to Congress as a representative of the 4th Congressional District. In 1997, after a return to private law, Jay was appointed regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, where he oversaw programs in Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. The Inslees returned to Puget Sound in 1998, where Jay represented the 1st Congressional District for 13 years. In 2012, Jay was elected Washington’s 23rd governor.

Through two terms as governor, Jay’s focus has been on building a brighter future for every Washingtonian. Under his clear leadership, Washington helped build an economy that is ranked number one for both businesses and workers. In achieving this status, the state has become a vital roadmap for the rest of the nation.

Jay has steadily led the way for profound social and economic changes in Washington: raising the minimum wage, passing best-in-the-nation paid family leave, providing sick leave to every Washington worker, making historic investments in transportation and education, and passing critical first-in-the-nation health care protections. And as the Trump administration has repeatedly threatened the rights of Washington’s residents, our state has resolutely pushed back, suing the Trump administration more than fifty times.

Jay has firmly established the state of Washington as the national leader in fighting climate change. He created the Clean Energy Fund, a model for economic development aligned with climate change goals, creating hundreds of jobs and setting unprecedented emissions standards, making Washington state the standard-bearer for the nation.

Jay Robert Inslee is an American politician and economist who has served as the 23rd governor of Washington since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 1995 and again from 1999 to 2012, and was a candidate for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination
