Salford City Football Club

Salford City Football Club is a professional football club in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. The club competes in League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league system

1940 – The beginning

The Club was formed in 1940 as Salford Central and competed in the local Eccles and District Leagues as a team for local boys to play football. Early success came in the form of two Division 2 titles in 1955-56 and 1959-1960, and the Division 3 title in 1958-59

2013 – The Takeover

2022-23 – Today

Neil Wood was appointed as Head Coach in May 2022, joining the Club after a number of years coaching at Manchester United including the previous three as Head Coach of the Under-23s. His appointment sought to bring an exciting new playing style to the Club, and more emphasis on player development. Three wins in the first four games put Salford top of League Two for the first time ever, and the continued early season form of Brandon Thomas-Asante saw him earn a move to Championship club West Bromwich Albion for an undisclosed fee.

Despite a few injuries through the autumn we qualified from the Papa Johns Trophy group stage for the third time in four seasons, and earned an FA Cup first round replay after a 0-0 draw away at League One high-flyers Peterborough United. While our FA Cup run was halted after a 3-0 defeat, we went through to the quarter-final of the Papa John’s Trophy and came close to knocking out Cheltenham Town who won 3-1 on the night.

We were regularly praised for our style and tenacity throughout the season, playing well and scoring late goals to achieve results that maintained a position in the top half of the table for the whole of the campaign. There were memorable wins along the way too including a 5-2 thrashing of Mansfield Town, and late 3-2 wins away at AFC Wimbledon, Walsall and Carlisle United. Despite a final day defeat to Gillingham, and a nervous wait for full time between Colchester United and Mansfield, a place in the play-offs was confirmed for the first time with a seventh-place finish. Stockport County were our opponents in the semi-final, and a solitary Matt Smith goal gave us a 1-0 aggregate lead going into the second leg. Tanto Olaofe’s goal levelled the tie on aggregate and forced extra time, where Stevie Mallan’s strike looked to have sent Salford to Wembley for a third time, only for Jack Stretton to equalise with minutes to go. County then prevailed in the penalty shootout to bring the season to an end, but it was a campaign with lots of positives to reflect on including the accolade of finishing as top scorers in League Two, while Elliot Watt was named in the Team of the Season after a league-best 16 assists, joined by Ibou Touray.

The Lionesses came close to promotion too, finishing as runners-up to FC United of Manchester in the NWWRFL Premier Division.

Following the end of the season, and after lots of hard work from staff across the Club, the Academy was awarded Category 3 status meaning that from 2023-24 we can operate teams from Under-9s to Under-18s – a hugely significant step in the Club’s development to lay foundations for future generations of talent.

It will have an emphasis on positive physical and mental wellbeing, and supporting people with a disability, people who are experiencing homelessness, or young people who have, or may be at risk of, committing offences. The Foundation is proudly sponsored by 1st CENTRAL. The motor insurance company’s two-year sponsorship deal will help to accelerate the work of the Foundation, and will also see employees from 1ST CENTRAL’s Salford office supporting a number of local projects.
