Blackpool Illuminations

The annual Illuminations display is to be extended by two months for the third consecutive year to provide an invaluable boost to the resort’s tourism season after the effects of COVID-19. It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience miles of festoon, larger-than-life tableaux, illuminated trams, instagrammable features, laser technology and stunning projection shows during the dark winter months.

Blackpool was the first town to have electric street lighting and visitors first came to marvel at Blackpool’s Lights in 1879 when just eight arc lamps bathed the Promenade. This sparked Blackpool’s long association with light and electricity.

The world-famous Illuminations need little introduction. There are six miles of traditional festoons and tableaux along the Promenade – no wonder it’s commonly known as the greatest free light show on Earth! In 2022, Blackpool Illuminations will be shining from 2 September – 2 January 2023.

Blackpool Illuminations is an annual lights festival, founded in 1879 and first switched on 18 September that year, held each autumn in the British seaside resort of Blackpool on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire. Also known locally as The Lights or The Illuminations, they run each year for sixty-six days, from Mid September until early November at a time when most other English seaside resorts’ seasons are coming to an end
