President John F. Kennedy’s legacy is built on his unwavering belief in humanity’s capacity to achieve the extraordinary. In his iconic 1962 speech at Rice University, he urged the nation to embrace the challenge of landing on the Moon before the decade’s end. His vision, brought to life through technological advancements, partnerships, and a united determination, showcased the power of innovation to transform the impossible into reality. This enduring spirit continues to motivate people to pursue ambitious endeavors that benefit their communities, nations, and the world.
We set sail on this new sea because there is new knowledge to be gained, and new rights to be won, and they must be won and used for the progress of all people.
– President John F. Kennedy, September 12, 1962
Inspired by Kennedy’s Moonshot speech, Prince William established The Earthshot Prize in 2020 as a bold global initiative to identify and scale groundbreaking environmental solutions. The Prize aims to protect and restore the planet by fostering innovative responses to climate and environmental challenges. In 2022, the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation proudly collaborated with The Earthshot Prize to host its prestigious Awards Ceremony in Boston, underscoring the city’s reputation as a hub of innovation. Building on this momentum, the Earthshot Innovation Challenge: Northeast U.S. Edition was launched in 2024 to spark transformative solutions across the U.S. and embody Kennedy’s visionary spirit.
