HRH Princess Anne Honours 220 Years of Trafalgar with the RNRMC and WEA — A Royal Salute to Charity, Courage and Commitment
On Thursday, 23 October, the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich came alive with history, tradition, and celebration as Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Patron of the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC), attended a spectacular Trafalgar Night Dinner. Hosted by RNRMC and the White Ensign Association (WEA), the evening marked the 220th anniversary of Britain’s iconic victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and honoured the memory of Admiral Lord Nelson. In attendance, broadcaster Michael Portillo delivering an inspiring keynote address.
Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence’s presence added further distinction to the evening, reflecting his own longstanding dedication to the Royal Navy and deep commitment to supporting the service community. A respected leader and advocate for maritime heritage, his attendance underscored the significance of the occasion and the shared sense of pride, duty and legacy that unites all those who continue to champion the Royal Navy’s past, present and future.
More than 350 guests, including headline sponsors Babcock, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, and Oaklin, joined naval veterans, serving personnel, loyal supporters, and local Greenwich residents for an evening brimming with maritime tradition and festivity. Guests were treated to the ceremonial ‘Parading of the Beef,’ stunning chocolate ‘Ships of the Line,’ an electrifying performance of mess beatings by the Corps of Drums from the Royal Marines Band Service, and rousing sea shanties that filled the hall with the spirit of the Navy. The combination of ceremony, spectacle, and camaraderie made for a truly unforgettable night.
Beyond the pageantry, the evening celebrated the incredible work of RNRMC and WEA, highlighting their ongoing support for serving and retired Royal Navy and Royal Marine personnel. Guests had the opportunity to engage directly with the charities, learning how their contributions help fund welfare, community initiatives, and vital support services for naval families. Trafalgar Night is a time to reflect on courage, resilience, and service—and this dinner perfectly captured that spirit.
Trafalgar Night itself has been a cherished tradition for over 200 years. On 21 October 1805, the Royal Navy secured a decisive victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, though it came at the cost of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson’s life. Every year, commemorative services and dinners celebrate the bravery, dedication, and enduring legacy of those who fought. Today, these events also serve to connect naval history with the present, raising awareness and funds for the charities that continue to support the Royal Navy community.

“It is a privilege to have partnered with RNRMC to mark the 220th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar, a defining moment in our nation’s naval history. The men and women in today’s fleet do their duty just as the sailors and marines in Nelson’s fleet did over two centuries ago, and so, alongside the RNRMC, it is an honour to support them, our veterans, and their families.”
Samantha Nicolson, Interim CEO of RNRMC, Reflecting on the evening, remarked:
“It was fantastic to co-host another memorable Trafalgar Night at the Painted Hall with the White Ensign Association, and an honour for it to once again be in the presence of HRH The Princess Royal. Nights like these remind us of the strength and spirit which continue to drive RNRMC and WEA forward in support of the naval community.”
