HRH Prince William hosts crucial summit in fight to end homelessness
HRH Prince of Wales welcomed an international delegation to Bournemouth, where they gathered to explore forward-thinking solutions shaped through his Homewards initiative, a programme dedicated to preventing youth homelessness. With recent figures showing that one in sixty young people across the United Kingdom experienced homelessness during 2024 and 2025, the urgency behind this work is both striking and deeply human.
Launched in 2023, Homewards aims to create a lasting framework capable of ending homelessness in all its forms. Six pilot regions were selected, including Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, establishing the area as a leading example of collaborative progress. Delegates from Australia, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands and Finland travelled to witness how local partnerships are shaping meaningful outcomes. Reflecting on the visit, Melanie Redman, president of A Way Home Canada, shared, “It’s fantastic to see the prince throw his support behind something so important because young people deserve better outcomes… to see the Royal Foundation so involved in this and at such a personal level is truly exciting.”
At Bournemouth Pier, the Prince met representatives from charities, education, and local government, joining discussions with the BCP Youth Homelessness Board to understand how coordinated action is preventing young people from reaching crisis point. Theo, a member of Homewards’ National Co-Production Group, spoke of the encounter, saying, “He was very engaged… very keen to hear how the project is going and how fundamental lived experience is… he needs all of our support and to work together.”
This mission carries personal significance for the Prince, inspired by early visits to shelters with Diana, Princess of Wales, which left a lasting impression. His commitment today reflects a belief that lasting change comes through unity and shared responsibility. Frances Beecher, chairwoman of the BCP Council’s Youth Homelessness Board, observed, “He is totally engaged… what is really clear is he wants to do whatever he can to ensure the issue is centralised… and people come together to solve youth homelessness.”
Local leadership continues to drive momentum, with tangible progress already emerging. Councillor Kieran Wilson reflected on their conversation, describing it as “lovely,” adding, “You can see that he really cares about this issue… no young person should be without a home.” He also highlighted encouraging results, noting, “Over the last year, we’ve seen a doubling in the prevention of young people going into homelessness… we’re patient, persistent, and hopeful that in the long term it will have a real impact.”

Through Homewards, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales has transformed compassion into measurable progress, demonstrating how consistency, and genuine care can reshape lives. Since its launch in 2023, communities involved in the programme have reported significant advances, including increased early-intervention strategies, stronger collaboration between housing, education, and support services, and a notable rise in preventing young people from entering homelessness altogether.
HRH Prince William, through his vision, shows that hope is not merely imagined—it is built, shared, and lived. His unwavering dedication continues to inspire momentum across sectors, proving that when leadership is guided by empathy, kindness, understanding, and determination, meaningful and lasting change is not only possible, but already unfolding.
