Finalists announced for 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards
At the third-annual Earthshot Innovation Summit, held in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, The Earthshot Prize unveiled its fourth cohort of Prize Finalists, an inspiring group of global innovators, entrepreneurs, community leaders and advocates pioneering solutions to our most pressing climate and environmental challenges.
Each of the 15 Finalists are in the running to receive five £1 million prizes which will be awarded at The Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa on Wednesday 6 November.
The 2024 Earthshot Prize finalists
The 2024 Earthshot Prize finalists were announced at the Earthshot Innovation Summit in New York on September 24, 2024. This year’s finalists represent a diverse range of projects aimed at tackling critical environmental challenges, categorized into five key areas:
1. Protect and Restore Nature:
- Amazon Sacred Headwaters Alliance (Ecuador): An alliance of 30 indigenous nations protecting 86 million acres of rainforest.
- NatureMetrics (UK): A company using environmental DNA to monitor biodiversity.
- Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative (Kazakhstan): Known for the successful recovery of the Saiga antelope.
2. Clean Our Air:
- GAYO, Green Africa Youth Organization (Ghana): A youth-led organization promoting zero waste practices.
- d.light (Pan-Africa): A provider of affordable solar home systems.
- MYCL (Indonesia): A company converting crop waste into a leather alternative.
3. Revive Our Oceans:
- High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People (Global): An alliance aiming to protect 30% of land and oceans by 2030.
- MiAlgae (UK): A business that grows microalgae for Omega-3 production to reduce reliance on wild fish.
- Coast 4C (Philippines): A social enterprise focusing on regenerative seaweed farming.
4. Build a Waste-Free World:
- Natural Fiber Welding (USA): A company creating biodegradable alternatives to plastics.
- Ferment’Up(France): A firm upcycling food waste into nutritious ingredients.
- Keep IT Cool (Kenya): A provider of solar-powered refrigeration solutions.
5. Fix Our Climate:
- Equatic (USA): This company uses seawater electrolysis to remove CO2 from the ocean.
- Advanced Thermovoltaic Systems (USA): They convert industrial heat waste into electricity.
- Build Up Nepal (Nepal): A social enterprise creating earthquake-resilient bricks with lower carbon emissions.
