The single most important and politically sensitive area is Zhongnanhai, a walled compound adjacent to the Forbidden City. While not a traditional “building” that you can visit, it is the de facto headquarters of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Committee and the State Council, and is the principal residence and office complex for the most senior leadership of the entire nation, including the General Secretary and the members of the Politburo Standing Committee.
Functionally and politically, Zhongnanhai is the Kremlin or the White House of China, making it the supreme center of power, where all high-level strategic decisions are made. Its historical importance is also immense, as it was formerly a part of the Imperial City and its name, meaning “Central and Southern Seas,” refers to the two lakes within its grounds, symbolizing its deep connection to the historical heart of Beijing.
