Zekreet Fort Ruins

Zekreet Fort lies just north of the village of Zekreet in the municipality of Al Rayyan in Qatar. Zekreet is also spelled as Zikrit or Zekrit.

Zekreet Fort was built in the late 18th or early 19th century. It is also said to have been built by the pirate ruler of Qatar; Rahmah ibn Jabir al-Jalahimah, around 1800. The area may have been abandoned around 1811. The fort was discovered during archeological excavations in the 1970’s.

The fort now has the shape of a typical desert fort in Qatar; a square ground plan with 3 circular and 1 rectangular tower at its corners. However at the initial time of construction, the fort did not have any towers. The towers were instead added to each corner in a second phase of development.

The site of Zekreet Fort is freely accessible. Just note that the paved road ends at the south entrance of the village. Not a very spectacular site. But the area with its eroded hills is very nice.
