Wolverhampton Art Gallery

Collections of works from contemporary and pop art to Georgian and Victorian in a grand building. Wolverhampton Art Gallery, located in the heart of Wolverhampton, West Midlands, is a notable cultural institution with a rich history. The striking Victorian building, a Grade II* listed structure, was originally funded and built by local contractor Philip Horsman and opened to the public in 1884. Its exterior is adorned with a detailed sculptural frieze representing various arts and crafts, including painting, architecture, and metalworking. Over the years, the gallery has been expanded and refurbished, most notably with a modern extension in 2007 that doubled its exhibition space and introduced a dedicated gallery for its significant collection of Pop Art.

The gallery’s collection is both diverse and extensive, spanning over 300 years of art and social history. While its historical collections are strong in Victorian and Georgian art, featuring works by prominent artists of the time, it also has internationally significant pieces. A notable highlight is the Flemish Baroque painting Peace and Plenty Binding the Arrows of War by Abraham Janssens van Nuyssen, which is the only work by the artist in a public collection in the UK. The gallery also holds a large collection of works related to the Northern Irish Troubles and a substantial collection of Pop Art, one of the best outside of London, with works by artists like Andy Warhol and Peter Blake.

In addition to its permanent collections, Wolverhampton Art Gallery is known for its dynamic program of temporary exhibitions and events. It offers a family-friendly atmosphere with a variety of workshops, talks, and activities for all ages. The gallery also features a café and a shop. As part of Wolverhampton Arts and Heritage, which also includes Bantock House Museum and Bilston Craft Gallery, it is a key cultural hub in the city, providing a free and accessible space for residents and visitors to engage with art and local history.
