The idea of founding the Tatra Museum was born in 1888 in the company of friends Chałubiński Titus (1820-1889), who wanted to honor his merits as a discoverer of Zakopane medicinal values, the outstanding Warsaw physician, scholar and social activist, a great lover of the Tatra Mountains and mountain culture. To realize this idea, the founders established the Society Tatra Museum im. Dr. Titus Chałubińskiego. One of the tasks of the Society was to seek means and ways of development of museum equipment. The oldest collections, which consisted of collections: botanical, geological, zoological and ethnographic beginning and the library were collected through donations and purchase of whole collections from private collectors. The first exhibition was located in rented by the Society, which does not exist today home on Krupówki. The eighties nineteenth century. The beginnings of the formation of the first collection of folk arts and crafts. Ethnographic then gathered: Rose of Count Potocki. Raczyńska, Maria and Bronisław Dembowscy, Zygmunt Gnatowski. Over time, their collections went to the Tatra Museum.

In 1892, Tatra Museum Society led to the construction of its own headquarters. This is made possible thanks to a donation heirs of Dr. Titus Chałubiński, who donated the Society of plot construction. It was designed by the Warsaw architect Józef Pius Dziekoński. In the same year the collections were moved to the new building. The last years of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. This period of decreased activity of the organization of the Society facility, which confirms the lack of articles and mentions in the press.
