Wernigerode Castle, Wernigerode, Germany

Magnificent Wernigerode Castle is a schloss located in the Harz mountains above the town of Wernigerode in Saxony-Anhalt. Wernigerode Castle was originally a medieval fortress, which was to secure the path of the German emperors of the Middle Ages on their hunting expeditions to the Harz Mountains.

A first Burganlage was built at the beginning of the 12th century above the town of Wernigerode. Over the course of its history, the complex has undergone various profound changes.

At the end of the fifteenth century, it was greatly expanded in late Gothic style, two of which are still visible in the courtyard courtyard. In the course of the 16th century, the castle was converted into a renaissance fortress, still visible today in the Renaissance staircase. In the end of the 30-year war, Graf Ernst at Stolberg-Wernigerode began to build a baroque reconstruction of the Burgreste into a romantic residence castle in the form of a round castle.
