Wagah, Punjab, India

Wagah is a village situated near a road border crossing, goods transit terminal and a railway station between Pakistan and India, and lies on the Grand Trunk Road between the cities of Amritsar, Punjab, India, and Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. The border is located 24 kilometres from Lahore and 32 kilometres ( from Amritsar. It is also 3 kilometres from the bordering village of Attari.

Because of the tense relations between India and Pakistan, few foreigners actually cross the border between Attari and Wagah. However, plenty of people come to watch the curious border-closing ceremony every evening. The border is 30km west of Amritsar; buses run from Amritsar to Attari (₹30), from where it’s a 2km walk to the customs post (or ₹10 in a shared auto). The border ceremony is held a few hundred metres beyond the customs post.
