Vysotsky Monastery, erpukhov, Moscow Oblast, Russia

In the town of Serpukhov, near Moscow, on the high left bank of the river Nara, not far from its confluence into the Oka, the ancient monastery – Serpuhovskoy Vysotsky Monastery – is beautifully situated. It was founded with the blessing of St. Sergius of Radonezh in 1374 by the Serpukhov prince Vladimir Andreevich Hrabry, cousin and associate of the Grand Duke Dimitry Ioannovich Donskoi. The first rector of the monastery, the Monk Sergius, placed his beloved apprentice Athanasius. The monastery received its name from a place on a high, beautiful hill, popularly called “High”.

In the XVIII century. Andrei Timofeevich Bolotov, who lived in his estate of Dvoryaninovo not far from Serpukhov, wrote: “… I admired the majestic view of the monastery of Vysotsky, who appeared to me in the middle of a wide hole between two dense and high forests adorning this hill for many centuries and seeing our forefathers … ”

Today the monastery has 10 inhabitants. Hegumen of the monastery is His Grace, Bishop Serpukhovskoy. Divine services in the monastery are held in a full daily circle. Every day prayer services are performed in front of the miraculous image of the Mother of God “The Inexhaustible Chalice “. Many of the pilgrims who come to the monastery feel special grace within the walls of the monastery: a prayerful attitude, a desire for repentance and purification of the soul, tranquility in the “House of the Blessed Virgin.”
