The Victoria Tower Bell Monument in Ottawa is a poignant historical landmark situated on Parliament Hill. It commemorates the original Victoria Tower, which was part of the Centre Block of Canada’s Parliament Buildings until it was destroyed by fire in 1916. The bell, cast in 1875 and installed in the tower in 1877, fell during the fire and now serves as one of the few remaining links to Canada’s first house of Parliament.
The monument was unveiled in 2000, following restoration efforts supported by the Canadian Bankers Association. The bell is displayed on a circular granite base etched to resemble a clock face, symbolizing its role in timekeeping. Its inclined position reflects the angle at which it came to rest after falling during the 1916 fire. Located near the Library of Parliament and the East Block, the Victoria Tower Bell Monument is easily accessible to visitors exploring the Parliamentary Precinct.
