Turret 48B, often referred to as Willowford West, is a Roman watchtower located along Hadrian’s Wall in Cumbria, England. It stands east of Willowford Farm on the south bank of the River Irthing and is part of a well-preserved section of the Wall. This turret, positioned between Milecastle 48 and Milecastle 49, played a crucial role in monitoring the surrounding landscape and maintaining the security of the Roman frontier.
The remains of Turret 48B are particularly striking, with parts of the structure still standing up to nine courses high. Over time, some of the stones from the turret have been used in nearby constructions, but the site retains its historical significance and offers a clear glimpse into the Roman military’s architectural ingenuity.
