Tsam Tsam, Ogooue Et Des Lacs, Gabon

Take a two hour boat cruise down the river, explore the lakes and see hippopotamus then enjoy a community-run ecotourism project at Tsam Tsam creates jobs for local residents while protecting biodiversity and generating income for OELO’s conservation initiatives.

In 2013, OELO completed Phase I of construction at its ecotourism site, Tsam Tsam. Three specialists came from Libreville to lend technical advice on design and a team of over 30 lake residents participated in creating five platforms. Locations for each platform were chosen to maximize views and airflow while minimizing disturbance to the lakeshore. Platforms were built around existing trees to minimize clearing of vegetation and to prevent erosion. Because of wide seasonal variation in water levels, the platforms were built on stilts ranging between two and four meters. While positioned over land during the dry season, the platforms extend over the water during the rainy season when water levels are at their highest.
