Trilha Parque Lage para o Corcovado

The Parque Lage to Corcovado Trail is one of the most exciting and rewarding hikes in Rio de Janeiro. This challenging trail takes you from the elegant grounds of Parque Lage all the way to the top of Corcovado Mountain, where you’re rewarded with an incredible, close-up view of the Christ the Redeemer statue. This is not a casual walk; it’s a demanding hike that requires a good level of physical fitness. The trail is approximately 2.2 kilometers (about 1.4 miles) long, but what it lacks in distance, it makes up for in steepness. It typically takes about 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace.

The trail begins behind the historic mansion at Parque Lage and quickly enters the lush and dense Tijuca National Park, the largest urban rainforest in the world. As you ascend, you’ll be surrounded by vibrant Atlantic Forest, with a chance to spot native wildlife like monkeys and exotic birds. The final section of the trail is particularly steep, requiring some light scrambling with the aid of ropes and rocks to reach the top.

Important Information & Safety

Difficulty: This is a challenging hike. The terrain is very steep, especially as you get closer to the top. Proper hiking shoes and a good level of fitness are essential. It is highly recommended to hike this trail with a local guide or in a group. The trail can be confusing, and there have been past incidents of robbery, though security has been increased in recent years. Hiking with a guide ensures your safety and helps you navigate the trail more easily. The trail ends at the base of the Christ the Redeemer statue. To enter the monument and get to the viewing platform, you must purchase a ticket. You can’t enter the monument for free just because you hiked up. Make sure to bring plenty of water (at least 1.5 liters), insect repellent, sunscreen, and a light snack. It’s best to start your hike in the morning to avoid the midday heat and have plenty of time to explore the summit. Finishing this trail is a fantastic accomplishment and a unique way to experience one of the world’s most famous landmarks!
