From the dynamic world of finance to the heart of Birmingham, Tom Wagner stands as a beacon of ambition, leadership, and unwavering dedication. As Chairman of Birmingham City Football Club, he has ignited a passionate revolution, transforming not just a football club, but an entire community. Born in July 1969, Tom Wagner’s journey to the helm of a beloved English football institution is one of remarkable vision and relentless pursuit of excellence. After graduating from Villanova University and Columbia Business School, he honed his formidable financial acumen, co-founding Knighthead Capital Management LLC in 2008. There, he cultivated a reputation for insightful analysis, operational prowess, and a deep understanding of complex financial landscapes.
But it was in July 2023 that Tom’s journey took an exciting and truly inspiring turn. Through Shelby Companies Limited, a subsidiary of Knighthead, he stepped forward to become a co-owner of Birmingham City FC, quickly assuming the role of Chairman. This wasn’t merely a business acquisition; it was a commitment, a pledge to breathe new life into a club steeped in history, yet yearning for a brighter future. Tom’s impact was immediate and profound. He arrived with a clear, bold vision: to return Birmingham City to the Premier League and establish them as a competitive force. Even a season in League One, which many might have seen as a setback, was embraced by Tom as an opportunity for an even stronger rebuild. His mantra, “if you can’t say it, you can’t do it,” reflects his belief in audacious goals and the power of conviction.
Beyond the pitch, Tom’s ambition for Birmingham extends into the very fabric of the city. He is the driving force behind the colossal “Sports Quarter” project – an incredible vision to construct a state-of-the-art 62,000-seat stadium and a vibrant commercial and leisure hub. This isn’t just about football; it’s about creating jobs, fostering regeneration, and building a world-class destination that will uplift the entire West Midlands region.
What truly sets Tom Wagner apart is his visible passion and genuine connection with the Bluenose faithful. He is often seen amongst the supporters, sharing in the triumphs and the challenges, embodying the spirit of the club. His commitment to building strong commercial partnerships has already seen Birmingham City achieve remarkable revenue figures, setting a new standard for clubs outside of the Premier League’s parachute payment system.
Tom Wagner is more than a chairman; he is a testament to the power of big dreams and the courage to pursue them. He is inspiring a new generation of Bluenoses to believe in their club’s boundless potential, proving that with unwavering dedication, strategic foresight, and a touch of the extraordinary, anything is possible. Birmingham City Football Club, forged from Small Heath Alliance in 1875, boasts a vibrant history of resilience and unwavering passion. As a founding member and first champions of the Football League Second Division in 1892-93, the “Blues” have always been a fighting force in English football, frequently navigating between the top two tiers. Their trophy cabinet proudly displays two historic League Cup triumphs in 1963 and 2011, with the latter a memorable upset against Arsenal at Wembley. They also hold nine Second Division/Championship titles (including 1892-93, 1920-21, 1947-48, 1954-55, 2001-02, 2006-07, 2008-09), two Football League Trophy wins (1990-91, 1994-95), and most recently, the EFL League One title in 2024-25 with a record-breaking 111 points. Beyond silverware, Birmingham City holds the distinction of being the first English club to play in a major European final (the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1959-60).
The club’s trajectory has been dramatically influenced by the arrival of NFL legend Tom Brady as a minority owner in August 2023. Far more than a figurehead, Brady serves as Chairman of the club’s advisory board, injecting his renowned winning mentality and unparalleled experience in elite sports directly into the club’s culture. His presence has not only significantly amplified Birmingham City’s global visibility, particularly in North America, but has also fostered a renewed sense of ambition and belief among players and fans alike. Through strategic input on performance and a relentless drive for success, Brady’s influence is a clear signal that Birmingham City is embarking on an exciting new chapter, aiming for not just domestic glory but a global resurgence that aligns with the club’s rich heritage and the fierce loyalty of its Bluenose supporters.
The club has unveiled plans for a new 62,000-seat arena — tentatively called Birmingham City Powerhouse Stadium — to be built on a site in Bordesley Park, East Birmingham. The project forms the centerpiece of a broader “Sports Quarter” redevelopment that would include training facilities, venues for the women’s and academy teams, plus amenities and infrastructure to revitalize the surrounding area. With a projected price tag of about £1.2 billion, the stadium aims for completion by the 2030–31 season. The ambition behind it is clear: the club wants not just a larger ground, but a “beacon of excellence” — a multi-use venue capable of hosting top-level football, concerts, international sports events (potentially including NFL games), and major cultural spectacles.
Architecturally and symbolically, the Powerhouse has been designed to reflect the heritage and spirit of Birmingham. Its exterior will feature twelve towering chimney-like structures — a homage to the city’s industrial past — and the club say the stadium will be visible from miles away. Inside, state-of-the-art features such as a retractable roof and a moveable pitch will make the venue flexible, modern, and ready for a wide range of events beyond football.
The man behind this vision is chairman Tom Wagner, under whose stewardship the club is trying to redefine what Birmingham City represents. Wagner has spoken openly about building a new home worthy of the club’s ambitions — one that signals to fans, players and the wider world that Birmingham isn’t aiming just for survival, but for greatness.
Beyond stadiums and bricks, this project hopes to transform the urban fabric around the club — offering facilities not just for men’s football, but for women’s teams, academy talent, community engagement, and year-round cultural events. The dream is big: a club and city reborn together, with a ground that serves as a rallying point for the next generation.
This is more than just a stadium plan. It’s a bold declaration of belief in the future — a vision rooted in history but pointing forward, ambitious yet respectful of identity. If realised, the Powerhouse Stadium could redefine what it means to support Birmingham City: a place where history, community, sport and culture intersect.
