Tissington Hall
The Tissington Estate has been in our family for over 500 years and we are delighted to be the present custodians of a very special place. The Hall, today a prestigious Derbyshire wedding venue, was built in 1609 by our ancestor Frances and has been lived in by the family ever since. Only 300 other families in the country can witness that longevity.Sir Richard inherited the Hall and the Estate from his Uncle, the late Sir John FitzHerbert at the age of 24 in 1989.
It was a challenge that he was to embrace with enthusiasm and relish as he soon realised that the Estate needed to change its direction. Located at the southern edge of the Peak District National Park, the Estate extends to just under 2000 acres, centred on Tissington Hall. The origins of Well Dressing are lost in antiquity. They may even have their roots in pagan customs later given a Christian meaning. One theory says that the custom began just after the Black Death of 1348-9.
