In the XIX century, Old Ladoga, located relatively near the capital, has become a favorite place for travel of Russian artists. On a visit to the local collector Alexei Tomilov came OA Kiprensky, IK Aivazovsky, NK Roerich, BM Kustodiev, who created many paintings with views of these places. At the end of the century, the first archaeological excavations of the ancient settlement began – in 1896 Nikolay Brandenburg’s major work “Staraya Ladoga” was published.
Although the idea of creating a museum in Staraya Ladoga arose at the beginning of the 20th century, the first museum expositions were opened in the Ladoga fortress on July 15, 1971. In 1984, the local history museum received the status of a historical-architectural and archaeological museum-reserve of federal significance. Today, more than 150 historical and architectural monuments of the eighth and nineteenth centuries have been preserved on 160 hectares, and the richest collections of the archaeological, historical and everyday fund, the picture gallery, the fresco fund contain thousands of exhibits.
