
Symbolic, famed gateway to the Forbidden City dating to the 15th century but rebuilt many times. The Tiananmen, or the Gate of Heavenly Peace, is a monumental gate in the city center of Beijing, China, the front gate of the Imperial City of Beijing, located near the city’s Central Business District, and widely used as a national symbol.
The Gate of Heavenly Peace, or Tiananmen Tower, is featured on the officially emblem of the People’s Republic of China. Situated on the northern edge of Tiananmen Square, it served as the principal entry to the Imperial Palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Gate of Heavenly Peace is also the name of a documentary film about the protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989.
