Theatro da Paz, Belem, State of Para, Brazil

Theatro da Paz, located in Belém, Pará’s state capital, is a neoclassical-style building that seeks to achieve what other opera houses do, which is to have perfect acoustics and visibility. Its size and grandeur is the fruit of the wealth generated by latex exporting in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The Rubber Cycle, as the period became known, prompted great economic growth in the Amazon region, making the local aristocracy yearn for a large theatre with the capacity to promote performances of the lyrical genre, which were highly appreciated at the time.
