Theatermuseum der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf / Dumont Lindemann Archiv

Located between the theater and the opera house, the Theater Museum in the Hofgarten invites you to encounter cultural and theater history and theater practice with its exhibitions, educational offers and events. In changing exhibitions, the theater museum provides insights into the theater and cultural history of the past and present. In addition, visitors have the opportunity to experience theater performances, workshops, lectures or artist talks on the Dumont studio stage  or in the Lore-Lorentz hall . Interested researchers and visitors are cordially invited to use the library and archive for research. The Dumont-Lindemann Archive, the core of the Theater Museum donated by Gustav Lindemann to the state capital Düsseldorf in 1947, documents the Düsseldorf theater (1905-1932) founded by Louise Dumont and Gustav Lindemann as a pioneering reform project in a unique variety of materials.

Düsseldorf cultural life

From the art academy with its own gallery to the museum for European garden art, from Heine to Schumann, from the large opera stage to the private theatre, the Düsseldorf cultural life offers something for every taste.

art :Friends of the fine arts can draw on unlimited resources in the state capital. Above all, the axis along the Rhine – from the Ehrenhof complex to Carlstadt – offers art enjoyment at the highest density.

Literature :Literature lovers have the opportunity to visit one of the two literature museums, browse the media of the city libraries on site, at home or online, attend readings and much more.

music: From Kraftwerk to Doro Pesch or Toten Hosen to Heino – the styles of the most well-known musical representatives with Düsseldorf roots are just as varied as the music on offer in the city itself. Whether classical, rock, pop, jazz, electronic or Schlager – everyone will find something the right offer. The spectrum of concert halls ranges from the large arena to the intimate concert hall.

theatre: Those interested in theater are spoiled for choice in Düsseldorf. Whether straight theatre, music theatre, dance theater or puppet theatre, the selection is large. You can find classics as well as experimental ones, friends of the boulevard theater will find what they are looking for as well as fans of vaudeville or cabaret. There is even a museum dedicated to the theatre.

Movie: There is great enthusiasm for the film in the state capital. In addition to the film museum run by the city with its own cinema, it has a diverse cinema landscape – from multiplex to open-air cinema.

city history: Düsseldorf can look back on an eventful history. The city museum founded in 1873 illustrates the history of the Rhine metropolis. Its model collection of German inland shipping has found its place in the old castle tower as the Shipping Museum. The memorial on Mühlenstraße sees itself as a place of research, learning and remembrance, as well as a documentation site for the history of National Socialism in Düsseldorf.

Flora and fauna: Düsseldorf is a garden city and close to nature. This is also reflected in the museum landscape. In the south of the city, for example, the east wing of Schloss Benrath has housed the internationally unique Museum of European Garden Art since 2002. The Aquazoo Löbbecke Museum in the north of the city – currently closed for renovation – is a zoo and natural history museum in one.

Glass and ceramics: Two museums in Düsseldorf house exhibits that are as fragile as they are valuable. 3,500 years of glass art with over 3,000 pieces of glass art on 1,200 square meters is shown in the Hentrich Glass Museum at the Ehrenhof in the Museum Kunstpalast and in the Green Vault of the Tonhalle. The Hetjens Museum / German Ceramics Museum is the only German special museum of its kind to present and research artistically designed and important works of art from the entire field of ceramics from all eras and provenances.
