The Whispering Gallery
Churchyard and gardens outside Saint Paul’s cathedral, with a floor-plan of the original building. Whilst St Paul’s Cathedral itself is impressive enough, the Whispering Gallery could be the best place to propose in London for shy suitors. They can whisper and still be heard clearly by their date!
It’s all due to the unique acoustics of the gallery which carries the sound in waves. If your proposal gets the desired response and you feel like clapping afterwards, you’ll notice that each clap produces four echoes. A whispering gallery is usually a circular, hemispherical, elliptical or ellipsoidal enclosure, often beneath a dome or a vault, in which whispers can be heard clearly in other parts of the gallery. Such galleries can also be set up using two parabolic dishes. Sometimes the phenomenon is detected in caves.
