The Valley of Stang Alar, Guipavas, Brittany, France

Located in the town of Guipavas, close to Océanopolis and the Marina of Le Moulin Blanc, it is for the inhabitants a haven of relaxation and discovery with playgrounds for children, sports courses and several kilometers of walks.

Originally, quarrying has greatly altered the site which was subsequently used for a long time to supply Brest with water. It was forgotten in favor of the Elorn in the late 19th century. Left abandoned, the Stang-Alar becomes a garbage dump. From 1971, thanks to the efforts of the riverside associations, supported by the institutions and more particularly the Urban Community of Brest, the Vallon is reborn. In 1975, the idea of a botanical conservatory “for threatened plants” was born. At the beginning of the 80s, work, financed by Brest Métropole, began.

Now completely refurbished, the Vallon du Stang-Alar now houses one of the most prestigious botanical conservatories in the world, the National Botanical Conservatory of Brest.
