The Rt Hon Pat McFadden MP was appointed Secretary of State for Work and Pensions on 5 September 2025. He was previously Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster between 5 July 2024 and 5 September 2025. He was elected as the MP for Wolverhampton South East in May 2005.

Minister for Intergovernmental Relations
As Minister for Intergovernmental Relations, the role holder leads coordination with the devolved administrations on the Prime Minister’s behalf, working closely with the Territorial Offices, to make sure that across government work is being done on behalf of the entire United Kingdom: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
Key Responsibilities
- Facilitating Intergovernmental Dialogue: The DIR is the primary hub for interactions between the UK government and the devolved administrations. It supports a three-tier structure of intergovernmental forums, which includes ministerial and official-level meetings, to ensure that policies and issues affecting more than one part of the UK are discussed and resolved.
- Dispute Resolution: The department plays a key role in the formal process for resolving disputes that arise between the different governments. It provides administrative support and impartiality to help find a consensus-based resolution.
- Promoting Devolution Principles: It works to uphold the principles of devolution, such as mutual respect, effective communication, and transparency, to ensure a productive and collaborative relationship between the governments.
- Supporting the Devolution Settlement: The department is the custodian of the devolution settlement, ensuring that the legislative and constitutional frameworks are maintained and respected by all parties. It also handles the administrative functions of the Intergovernmental Relations Secretariat.
Secretary of State for Work and Pensions
The Secretary of State has overall responsibility for the business of the department, including the Departmental Strategy, planning and performance, reporting and governance requirements. They have direct responsibility for departmental expenditure. DWP is responsible for the administration of the State Pension and working age benefits system, providing support to:

Key Responsibilities
- Pensions and Retirement: The DWP is responsible for the State Pension and other related benefits like Pension Credit and Winter Fuel Payments. It also promotes saving for later life and manages key retirement-related services, such as the Pension Tracing Service.
- Benefits and Welfare: The department oversees a wide array of working-age, disability, and sickness benefits. This includes the administration of Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), and other forms of financial assistance for those who are unemployed, have a disability or health condition, or are on a low income.
- Employment and Skills: The DWP’s Jobcentre Plus network is a crucial part of its remit. It is responsible for helping people move from benefits into work, providing advice, training, and support to jobseekers. It also works on policies to increase workforce participation and support people to progress in their careers.
- Child Maintenance: The department’s Child Maintenance Service provides a statutory service for separated parents who cannot agree on financial arrangements for their children. It calculates, collects, and enforces payments to ensure that children receive the financial support they need.
