The Rt Hon David Lammy MP

The Rt Hon David Lammy was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs on 5 July 2024.

  • He studied law at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) Law School and was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales in 1994.
  • David was elected as Labour MP for Tottenham at the age of 27 in June 2000.
  • David served 9 years (2001 to 2010) as a Minister in the Labour government and was made a Privy Councillor in 2008.

David is also the author of ‘Out of the Ashes: Britain after the riots’, a book about the reasons behind the 2011 riots and what has to be done to prevent them happening ever again.

First Secretary of State

The Foreign Secretary has overall responsibility for the work of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, with a particular focus on:

  • Strategy Directorate
  • national security
  • intelligence
  • honours
  • Europe
  • all major spending decisions, and overall delivery and management of the 0.7% of Gross National Income spending for Official Development Assistance (ODA)
  • working with and supporting international partners on the global response to COVID-19

Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

FCDO is a ministerial department, supported by 12 agencies and public bodies.

FCO was a ministerial department from October 1968 to September 2020. It merged with the Department for International Development to create FCDO.
