President Inauguration Day Ceremony

The Presidential Inauguration Ceremony is a momentous occasion in the United States, marking the peaceful transition of power. Held every four years, it is an event steeped in tradition and national pride. The ceremony includes the swearing-in of the new president, who takes the Oath of Office to formally assume the role of Commander-in-Chief. The event is attended by high-ranking government officials, dignitaries, and thousands of citizens, often with a public address, parade, and various festivities. This day represents a key democratic process, highlighting the unity of the country and the continuation of democratic governance.

The President of the U.S. Oath of Office

The Oath of Office taken by the President of the United States during the Inauguration Ceremony is a solemn promise to uphold the Constitution and serve the country with integrity. The specific wording of the oath, as dictated by Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution, is as follows:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

This oath is administered by the Chief Justice of the United States and is a pivotal moment in the inauguration, symbolising the peaceful transfer of power and the president’s commitment to their duties and responsibilities.

The Vice President of the U.S. Oath of Office

The vice-president-elect is sworn in first and repeats the same oath of office, in use since 1884, as senators, representatives, and other federal employees:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

Around noon, the president-elect recites the following oath in accordance with Article II, Section I of the U.S. Constitution:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
