The Lion of Bartholdi, Belfort, Franche-Comte, France
The proud guardian of the city is the symbol of the freedom and heroic resistance of Belfort troops led by Colonel Denfert-Rochereau , facing the Prussian army during the assault of 1870-1871 . The Lion of Belfort owes its existence to Frederick Auguste Bartholdi , illustrious sculptor at the origin of the Statue of Liberty.
Colossus, consisting of blocks of pink sandstone assembled against the cliff of the Citadel, it is now an integral part of the identity of the department.
