The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) maintains a significant presence in Scotland through its office at Abercrombie House in East Kilbride. This facility has been a cornerstone of the FCDO’s operations, housing approximately 1,500 staff members.
In December 2023, plans were announced to relocate this office to central Glasgow as part of an initiative to expand the department’s footprint in Scotland and attract a broader talent pool. However, by March 2025, these relocation plans were reconsidered, and it was decided that the FCDO would continue its operations at Abercrombie House in East Kilbride.
The FCDO’s commitment to Scotland is evident in its efforts to increase staffing levels in the region. The department aims to redeploy an additional 500 staff members to Scotland by 2025, reinforcing its dedication to enhancing its presence and operations within the country.

We promote and protect the UK’s core national interests of security, prosperity and sovereignty, while working to shape an open and stable international order.
We employ around 17,033 staff in our diplomatic and development offices worldwide, including in 281 embassies and high commissions abroad. Our UK-based staff work in King Charles Street in London, Abercrombie House in East Kilbride, and in Milton Keynes.
