The Cliff

The Cliff is a site steeped in sporting history and practical utility, a compact but well-appointed training ground on the banks of the River Irwell in Broughton, Salford. Originally home to cricket and rugby before Manchester United began using it in 1938 and later purchased it in 1951, The Cliff became synonymous with the club’s youth development and first-team training for much of the 20th century. Although Manchester United moved their primary first-team operations to Carrington in 2000, The Cliff has retained an important role as a community and academy facility and remains a visible local landmark that carries decades of footballing heritage.

Today the ground is a mixed-use training complex rather than a single-purpose elite base, combining traditional turf pitches with covered and artificial surfaces and ancillary buildings that support daily operations. The site includes multiple full-size grass pitches used for training and academy matches, floodlighting for evening sessions, and at least one indoor 3G/artificial pitch installed to extend year-round training capability. The built facilities have historically included changing rooms, a gym and sports science spaces, office and meeting rooms, canteen/communal areas, and parking for staff and visitors — practical assets that allow the ground to host youth fixtures, community programmes and professional training when required.

Seating and spectator provision at The Cliff are modest, reflecting its primary function as a training and academy site rather than a matchday stadium; published records note a small capacity figure (around 1,500) and the presence of basic spectator terraces and viewing points beside the main pitches. Over the years the site has seen refurbishments and targeted improvements — for example, specialist contractors have worked on indoor pitch and surface upgrades — ensuring the facility remains functional for coaching, community outreach and occasional match use.

In recent seasons The Cliff has also been used flexibly by neighbouring clubs and community programmes. Salford City, whose ownership and close ties to Manchester United figures have fostered local cooperation, has at times used The Cliff’s indoor and covered facilities to supplement its own training when pitch conditions or scheduling demand alternatives; Manchester United Foundation and the club have supported community and partner usage of the site. This kind of shared, pragmatic use underlines The Cliff’s continuing value: not as a glamourous modern training campus, but as a practical, historically resonant resource that still serves players, youth development and the local footballing community.
