Temple of Alexander Nevsky, Khabarovsk, Khabarovskiy kray, Russia

Our temple, consecrated in honor of one of the greatest Russian soldiers and statesmen of St. Alexander Nevsky, was opened in the hard years of the war – July 17, 1943 in the house along the street of Udarnaya, 5. In August 1944, the community, according to the decision of the Kirov district executive committee of September 7 1944, handed over the premises of the bread shop along Khoroshev Street, 11.

The first priest was Daniil Efimovich Furman (graduated from the Kamenetz-Podolsky Theological Seminary), and after his departure in 1944 for the office of the dean of Russian Orthodox Churches in the Khabarovsk Territory, a priest, Ivan Fedorovich Duvalkin, was appointed. Seraphim (Protopopov Tikhon Mitrofanovich), a monk of the Voronezh monastery who served his sentence in the Far East, served in the church as hieromonk.

The only one on the territory of the Khabarovsk Territory was transferred from the Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore icons, vestments of brocade and velvet, and from the Khabarovsk Regional Scientific Library – liturgical books and theological literature.

The inhabitants of even the most remote corners of the region were drawn into the temple. People were rallying people’s grief. Rector of the church served as a prayer for the victory over the Nazis, memorial services for the dead, and the parishioners tried to help the front and the families of the soldiers. They collected 38,259 rubles in the defense fund. To build a tank column “Dmitry Donskoy” was collected 25,000 rubles, to help the families of front-line soldiers 15860 rubles, for which the rector of the church and the community received thanks to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief.
