Tekedra Mawakana’s journey stands as a powerful beacon of resilience, purpose, and leadership — a story that shows how talent, vision and relentless commitment can shape the future. Born in Mississippi and raised across different states, she began her academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in political science before earning her law degree from Columbia Law School. These early foundations in law, ethics and policy set the stage for a career that would bridge regulation, technology and public interest — proving that a strong moral compass can sit at the heart of great innovation.
Her early career in law firms and telecommunications firms soon transformed into roles in major technology companies where she helped navigate complicated global policy, legal and regulatory challenges. Over time she held senior positions at companies like AOL, Yahoo!, and eBay — often working at the intersection of business, law and public responsibility. Her reputation grew as someone who could balance corporate ambition with careful consideration of societal values, championing privacy, fair regulation and responsible growth.
In 2017, she joined Waymo, the self‑driving car company, first leading public policy and government affairs, then rising to chief operating officer. Her deep experience in regulation, ethics, and global business prepared her perfectly for this challenge. Under her leadership as COO, Waymo launched its first commercial ride‑hailing service — a landmark moment in the history of autonomous mobility.
In April 2021 she became Co‑Chief Executive Officer of Waymo, sharing leadership with a technical co‑leader so she could focus on business strategy, partnerships, commercialization, trust and adoption. Her mission has never been just technological novelty — it has always been about bringing a safer, fairer, more accessible future of transportation to real people across cities, while rooting innovation in empathy, public trust and responsibility.
Beyond Waymo, Tekedra stands out as a mentor, investor, and advocate: she serves on the board of financial‑software company Intuit, advises mobility and technology ventures, and invests in startups — always mindful of uplifting underrepresented voices and building opportunity for others.
Her life teaches us that authenticity, integrity, and foresight matter as much as ambition. Tekedra Mawakana shows that leadership rooted in purpose — combining technical possibility with ethics, social responsibility and human-centered vision — can change entire industries. From law‑school graduate to co‑CEO of a global pioneer in autonomous driving, she embodies the belief that progress isn’t just about building tech, but building a better future for all.
At Waymo, our mission is to make it safe and easy for people and things to get where they’re going. That’s why the Waymo Driver can be applied across a number of different vehicles, from minivans and SUVs to Class 8 trucks, and across a variety of experiences like ride-hailing, trucking, and local delivery. We’re building a Driver that’s leading the way for the entire industry. Informed by unmatched experience and designed with safety at its heart, the Waymo Driver is our autonomous driving technology that never gets drunk, tired, or distracted.
