Based in a former Düsseldorf tram depot, tanzhaus nrw has developed into an international center for contemporary dance with eight dance and rehearsal studios and two stages. Covering an area of ​​4,000 square meters, it is both a play and production site as well as an academy with more than 1,500 visitors per week. Emerging from the “Werkstatt” founded in 1978 and managed by Bettina Masuch from 2014 to 2022, the house has developed into an internationally respected cultural institution. Since 2022, tanzhaus nrw has been under the direction of Ingrida Gerbutavičiūtė.
Non-professional and professional dancers, choreographers and artists from other genres represent what the house is all about: the collective experience of dance under the roof of a single institution. The separation of high, sub and socio-culture is overcome in tanzhaus nrw. The central concern is the creative examination of the human body and its role in contemporary societies.

 The tanzhaus nrw presents the international range of contemporary dance within the framework of thematic focuses, series, festivals and a large number of artistic collaborations. Guest performances by renowned choreographers such as Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Ohad Naharin, Yasmeen Godder, Lia Rodrigues or Gregory Maqoma alternate with a large number of artists from the region, including Stephanie Thiersch, Kollektiv Zoo and Hartmannmueller. tanzhaus nrw sees itself as a production house for freelance choreographers and is home to more than 50 artists every year in residencies, labs, workshops and other forms of gathering.
With the Factory Artists – since 2020 they are Reut Shemesh, the collective nutrospektif and Alfredo Zinola – the house is looking for more intensive collaboration with artists. The selection is a commitment by tanzhaus nrw to North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition, the 3rd generation of Factory Artists reflects the three profile-forming areas of tanzhaus nrw: stage, academy and young dance house. The Junges Tanzhaus, which is dedicated to dance for and with a young audience and is considered a unique competence center in this field, rounds off the diverse activities of the house.
