Tangen Fort, Langesund, Telemark, Norway

Due to the strategic position of the Langesund Rod, the Germans dismantled the area in 1941 and created “Hærkystbatteri”. The area was a long time military, and the site has many memorials after this time. Sprawling around the area are trenches and wrecked entrances to hidden rooms and halls blown into the mountains.

But still today you can see bunkers, races and cannon positions.

In 2006 the area gained status as a nature reserve. The favorable coastal climate and calcareous bedrock give the place diversity and many rare plant species such as flowering flower, red forest fruit, hyacinth, reinrose, barlind, etc. are growing here. Fences are set up around many of these to preserve them.

Despite the protection status, many trails make the area accessible for regular traffic and from the outer part of the Langesund bar there is a beautiful view of the city.

This is a great hiking area, but nature here is vulnerable and the traffic should be limited to roads and paths.
