Sunken Gardens is a botanical paradise in the midst of a bustling city. As St. Petersburg’s oldest living museum, this 100-year-old garden is home to some of the oldest tropical plants in the region. Unwind as you stroll through meandering paths, lush with exotic plants from around the world. The parterre garden in the Lake Gardens is a fairly new addition. The site taken was once a children’s playground bordered behind by a row of Juniperus chinensis. Now the circular garden is growing in a sunken area surrounded by pergolas, which support the climber Bauhinia kockiana.
This hardy climber is also a scrambler, tamed from the jungle to be grown in home gardens. It is free flowering and the orange flowers brighten up the gardens just as it gives the jungle its burst of colour. The parterre consists of low shrubs of Acalypha siamensis, Loropetalum chinense and Zephyranthes. In the centre of the circular garden is a star-shaped fountain, and dotted around this garden are white Grecian containers carrying flowering annuals.
