Nestled at the eastern edge of the Meadows, Summerhall breathes new life into the former Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies. This historic Edwardian-Baroque building, constructed in the early 20th century, has been imaginatively transformed into one of Europe’s most dynamic arts hubs. Original features like the anatomy theatre and dissection rooms have been repurposed as atmospheric studios, galleries, and performance venues, offering a unique blend of heritage and creativity.
Since its rebirth in 2011 under the stewardship of the McDowell family and creative director Robert McDowell, Summerhall has flourished into a year-round cultural powerhouse. It stands as a key venue during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and hosts a diverse array of events—from the Edinburgh Science Festival and MagicFest to live music, art exhibitions, workshops, and community gatherings. With its own pub (The Royal Dick), microbrewery (Barney’s), and small-batch gin distillery (Pickering’s), the complex offers a welcoming, convivial atmosphere that complements its artistic offerings.
Despite facing challenges in recent years—such as tax-related concerns and uncertainty around ownership—Summerhall has secured its future. A renewed lease under the backup ownership of Summerhall Arts ensures that more than 100 creative ventures will continue to thrive within its walls. Today, it stands as a vibrant incubator for innovation, experimentation, and cross-disciplinary collaboration, firmly cementing its place at the cultural heart of Edinburgh far beyond the festival season.
