Sudan National Museum, Al Khurtum, Sudan

A millennia of Sudanese history from black pharaohs to the black sultanate comes to life at Sudan National Museum. Built in 1965, the modernist building overlooking the confluence of the two Niles houses an impressive collection of stone relics from various civilizations that once lived in the vast territory of present-day Sudan. From Stone Age artifacts to Sudanese Nubia, the three-story building also houses Coptic frescoes and mosaics and elaborate Islamic art with jewelry, coins, and amulets. The museum grounds has a collection of statues and remains from three temples of Sudanese Nubia rescued from the dam construction site here; they’re reconstructed over a pool representing the Nile.
