Statek-muzeum “Dar Pomorza”, Gdynia, Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland
The beginnings of the National Maritime Museum dates back to 1958, in which it was formed the Society of Friends of the Museum. On the initiative of the Society and later Director of the Museum – Assoc. Przemysław Smolarek, in Artus Court was opened exhibition Fri. “From a paddle to a nuclear power.”
Already two years after this event, October 1, 1960, he managed to bring to life the Gdańsk Pomeranian Museum autonomous unit under the name “Maritime Department.”
January 1, 1962 year it has identified and transformed into an independent institution, its main office located in Crane. October 1, 1972, the Minister of Arts and Culture gave it the rank and status of a national institution under the name of Central Maritime Museum. Museum currently reports directly to the Ministry of Culture, which finances and supervises them.
The museum was founded on “greenfield” from scratch. The intention of the founders was to be a port – museum integrated into the very heart of the old port of Gdansk, with other typical port facilities such as crane, Granaries on Ołowianka, waterfront, vessels.
However, 45 years ago Ołowianka Island was in ruins, but Crane was rebuilt after the war. That’s why there was located headquarters Museum.
Museum realizowało parallel concept of development of the institution by acquiring new facilities. In June 1963 year created was first branch – Lighthouse Museum in the lighthouse in Rozewie (since 1964 in the hands of the Society of Friends of the Maritime Museum), and in subsequent years following: 1972. Fisheries Museum in Hel, in 1977, the building adjacent to Crane, where after the war was a boiler room, bearing the name of Colonial Depot, in 1984 Vistula River Museum in Tczew and “Dar Pomorza” in Gdynia, one of the most beautiful sailing ships in the world.
