Solway Aviation Museum

The Solway Aviation Museum is a volunteer-run museum located at Carlisle Lake District Airport in Crosby-on-Eden, Cumbria. Founded in 1961, the museum is dedicated to preserving and showcasing Britain’s aviation history, with a special focus on Cold War-era jet aircraft and the development of military aviation.

The museum’s collection features more than two dozen historically important aircraft, many with local ties. Among the highlights is the Avro Vulcan B.2, the only surviving Maritime Radar Reconnaissance version of the Vulcan, which visitors can sometimes explore in the cockpit. The collection also includes the Blackburn Beverley, the last of its kind in the world and currently under restoration, along with other notable jets such as the English Electric Canberra, Gloster Meteor, English Electric Lightning, McDonnell Douglas Phantom, and the de Havilland Vampire, which was the first aircraft acquired by the museum.

In addition to aircraft, the museum displays various aero engines, including the famous Rolls-Royce Merlin, and features exhibits on missile projects, ejection seat technology, and the history of the local airport. The exhibits combine to tell the story of Britain’s rich aviation heritage, especially during the jet age.

The museum is open from Friday to Sunday, from mid-morning to late afternoon, and it is recommended to check ahead for any changes in opening times. Admission fees support the ongoing restoration and maintenance efforts, with pricing options for adults, seniors, children, families, and serving armed forces personnel.

Visitors can enjoy free parking and accessible facilities, including wheelchair access and mobility aids upon request. Refreshments and a gift shop with aviation-themed merchandise are available to enhance the visitor experience. Being located on an active airfield, visitors are reminded to stay aware of aircraft and vehicles moving around the site.

Overall, the Solway Aviation Museum offers an engaging and informative experience for aviation enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. Its passionate volunteers provide insights and tours that bring the history and technology of British aviation to life, making it a worthwhile destination for anyone interested in flight and military heritage.
