Smangus, Jianshi, Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, Taiwan

Smangus is located at 1,500 meter altitude in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County. In the deep forest mountain, one of Taiwan aboriginal tribes-Atayal settled in here. This is also the most remote and last village in Taiwan that has access to electricity (in 1979).

Before the discovery of ancient red cypress trees, the village people was completely cut off from the outside world, and they would take four to five hours’ walk through the mountainous area to the nearest village to replenish their daily supplies. When the outsiders discovered the three top ranked red cypress trees on the island all located in Smangus, tourists started to come visit these giant magnificent trees after the road construction finished in 1995.
