Sinop Fortress Prison, Merkez, Sinop, Turkey

Historical Sinop Closed Prison is also known as “Alkatrazi” of Anatolia for a period and closed in 1999 and turned into a museum.

The building based on historical records has been the subject of poetry, song. The castle, which is home to the prison on the three sides of the sea and within the walls of the historical castle walls, was built by the Gascans for about 4000 years ago.

Greek, Pontus, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottomans protected and strengthened their fortunes during their period. The oldest documents belonging to the use of Kalenin as a prison date back to 1568.

Evliya Çelebi mentioned this dungeon in his travels; “There are 300 iron gates, giant guards, tied up with iron bars, and each one of them has ten prisoners hanging from the edge, and the guardians wander like dragons in the throne, not God’s guard, not prisoners, not birds.”

It was in 1887 that the inner calender was officially converted into a prison. At that time Sinop Mutasarrısı Veysel Pasha added a bath with the new buildings. In 1939 another building was built to be used as a child prison.
