Sigismund’s Column, Warsaw, Masovian Voivodeship, Poland

This grand monument commemorates the King who in the last years of the 16th century moved the capital from Krakow to Warsaw.

It is a fine structure, topped with a dynamic sculpture of Sigismund holding a cross in one hand and brandishing a sword in the other.

It was demolished by the Nazis in 1944 but in 1949 was erected on a new marble column, interestingly placed a few metres from the original.
